The museum was initially endowed during the 1960s with the permanent art collection of Joseph H. Hirshhorn. It was designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft and is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden is unique and Mark Bradford, modern artist, is equally one-of-a-kind. Bradford's "Pickett's Charge" is currently on display at the Hirshhorn, on the 3rd floor (takes up the entire floor).

The Hirshhorn is planning two important projects: a revitalization of the Sculpture Garden and repairs to the Museum’s envelope. Each supports our mission, enhances visitor experience and resolves critical infrastructure needs. The Hirshhorn features international modern and contemporary art in the celebrated Gordon Bunshaft designed cylindrical building, adjoining plaza, and sunken sculpture garden. The museum is a leading voice for contemporary art and culture and provides a national platform for the art and artists of our time.
